The fort was named Fort Loudoun, after the Earl of Loudoun, John Campbell. In 1756, Captain John Armstrong built a fort on Matthew's farm in order to protect the settlers against attacks from the Native Americans. He and his brother, John, came to Peters Township, Pennsylvania as early as 1735. One of Agricola's sources for that statement was Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania (1911) which says "The American progenitors were Matthew and John Patton of Covenanter stock, brothers, natives of Northern Ireland". In Patton Lineages (2003), Agricola states, "Matthew Patton was born at sea in 1705 according to family tradition said to be a son of John Patton, of Covenanter stock, native of northern Ireland".
